Take Time for Mindful Decision Making

51

The dangers and deceptions of multitasking

"Hire more multitaskers!" Not today. What was once considered a desirable trait and a cost-effective hire, is simply not true, research now shows. Our brains are not wired to multitask. Instead, we end up jumping from one thing to another (switch-tasking), often never completing the first task, decreasing our overall effectiveness and productivity.

52

Dedicate the time to build awareness.

Find an activity that heightens your senses. Pay attention how long it takes you to enter "the zone" and what creates an inspiring environment for you. (Notice I didn't say relaxing, see lesson 33.) Comfort is great for naps, but we're looking for a deliberate mindfulness that comes from achieving a focused state of awareness on the task at hand.

53

Hey, whose deadline is this anyway?

Don’t get caught up in what other people think is urgent. There will always be deadlines looming, however it's perfectly reasonable (and wise) to take time to think things over. Communicate the fact that you need time to consider all the options and that you will respond by the end of the week with a decision.

54

The dangerous demise of think-time.

The demise of "think-time" in a hurried work environment has produced poor and sometimes reckless decisions. With too much emphasis on speed, shortcuts are taken, teams are not consulted, and snap judgments are made. When pressure is high and deadlines threaten, remember that all bad decisions will eventually surface. Time saved now is not worth the trouble later.

55

Successful people utilize the morning hours.

Time is the most valuable thing you have. What if you utilized the quiet morning hours for the activities you value the most? Make a list of how you're spending your time now and where you'd like to spend your time. It will soon become obvious what is getting ignored. Now you know how to spend those morning hours!

56

Heighten attention and get fully present.

Become mindful in all things, even small things. There's a great story about the legendary basketball coach John Wooden and how he taught his players to put on socks. One wrinkle in a sock could lead to a blister, which could affect the entire game! When you get fully present, and start with the small things, great things can happen.

57

Don't just react, learn to interact.

Read any article today about the impact of social media, and you'll discover that we're all losing our ability to interact in person with others. Certainly this is concerning for businesses when the time comes to make decisions. Are executives merely reacting to a situation without mindful interaction? Next time, consider whether meeting in person would yield better decisions.

58

Disconnect to gain greater mental clarity.

Just changing your physical location can help get your head in the game. A ten-minute walk can clear your mind. When you return, focus your attention on the task at hand and allow yourself at least thirty minutes to settle into a state of flow without outside distractions. Once you've reached flow, stay with it for as long as possible.
